How much does a men's haircut cost in Singapore?

A men's haircut in Singapore costs between roughly $12 and $100. The difference is almost never the scissors — it is who is holding them, how long they have, and whether anyone talked to you first.

The tiers, roughly

WhereTypical price
Neighbourhood and express salons$12–20
Mall chains and mid-market salons$25–45
Independent salons, senior stylist$45–60
Established salons, director level$60–80
Named or senior-director stylists$80–100

These bands overlap and no salon fits neatly into one. But if you know roughly where a place sits, the price stops being surprising.

What actually changes as the price goes up

Time

A $15 cut is booked in fifteen or twenty minutes. A $60 cut is usually booked in an hour. That is the largest single driver of price in the whole industry, and it is the one nobody advertises.

Who does the work

At the lower end you may be cut by whoever is free. Higher up, salons split their pricing by stylist seniority — stylist, senior, director, senior director — and the number on the menu is really a number about experience. It is also common for a junior to wash and blow-dry while the senior does only the cut.

Whether there is a consultation

The gap between a haircut you tolerate and one you like is usually decided in the three minutes before anyone picks up scissors. Cheaper cuts skip this because the slot does not allow for it.

What is included

Check whether the price covers a wash and a finish or whether those are added. A $38 cut plus a $12 wash is a $50 cut.

You are not really choosing a price. You are choosing how much of someone's attention you want, and for how long.

Is a more expensive cut worth it?

Honestly, not always. If you wear your hair very short, get it cut every three weeks, and know exactly what you want, a good neighbourhood barber is excellent value and there is no sense paying four times as much for it.

It starts to be worth it when any of these are true:

  • You are growing something out or changing shape, where the plan matters more than the cut
  • Your hair does something awkward — cowlicks, thickness, a crown that will not sit
  • You go six weeks or longer between cuts, so each one has to hold up much further
  • Your appearance is part of your work, and being slightly off is expensive in a way a haircut is not

Where MANE sits

A gentlemen's cut at MANE is $48, which includes consultation, cut and finish. Every appointment is taken by a director-stylist with at least ten years' experience, in slots of at least an hour, and there are no assistants — the person who consults with you is the person who cuts.

By the tiers above that is priced at senior level for a service delivered at director level. We are aware of that. The room seats two, so we would rather be busy with people who come back than priced where we think we could be.
